**In this viral going social media era, our actions must be very cautious!**

A new age cinema. I don’t know how it was put under ‘found footage’ subgenre film, since the webcams involved I think it is very much valid. There are lots of interesting stats for this like it is a $1m film, 80 minutes long, shot within the 16 days, but made to look like a single shot film in real time. This is a story of friends gang whose friend was recently committed suicide. Like usual one day, they are all hanging out on the Skype for a group chat, finds a stranger contact live among them who claims she’s their dead friend. So the quest begins to find who really it is and what is the purpose behind such a pose.

This story is very familiar. Like a gang was put together in a room and revealing each others secret to bring total chaos. Take for example ‘Cube’. What follows is we all know which is actually a famous cliché in a thriller like this. So I thought similar way for this and it was, but only in a digital format where the current world trend stands. So this film can be enjoyed by youngsters and those who are familiar which internet forums like facebook, skype, google, email et cetera. In the entire film, all you would see is the computer screen. So you have to quick where mousing is moving and text was composed and concentrating the audio comments. Something like sitting next to a friend’s computer and looking what he’s doing.

I think it was a good film, keeps us guessing till the final minute. I’m watching it a bit late, but very happy I did not miss it after all and there is already a second film getting ready which is due this year’s end. But I doubt the film won’t get anywhere near to this one. The franchise might end up like ‘Paranormal Activity’ if sequels keeping coming. The actors were good though. I thought one of them was Jennifer Carpenter where one of the film posters resembles ‘Quarantine’, but during the watch I realised it was a different actress.

Despite the familiar theme, the setting makes all the difference and pretty entertaining. The end scene was a surprise, because until that point I was not aware of this film genre. Definitely worth a watch for modernising the old storyline with lots of suspense.

‘Unfriended’ is a modern horror film with interesting messages about modern society and our addiction to social networking tools on the Internet. It touches on quite a sensitive subject in cyber bullying from the very disturbing introduction. It tells the story of a teenage girl who was publicly humiliated on the internet and commits suicide due to the heckling and bullying from her peers. A year on and it seems that this group of peers are being stalked online by a vengeful pursuer.

Gabradze’s direction is very intriguing. ‘Unfriended’ (lovingly renamed ‘Mad Macs’ by me) plays out in very simplistic fashion. The film shows the main character’s computer screen throughout it’s duration. The audience see every keystroke and mistake made by Blaire Lily (Shelley Hennig). This is a very compelling technique when trying to show the character’s panic and fear slowly progressing. Blaire plays around with music software known as ‘Spotify’ during the film which gives an excuse for there to be non-diegetic music to add to the atmosphere.

As the film is mainly a conference video call on ‘Skype’, the actors are in separate rooms on individual “webcams” to add to the realism of the story. Although the film didn’t require the actors each to connect to the internet, occasional screen buffering and flickering help add to the illusion.

‘Unfriended’ is a very dialogue-driven film as not a lot of action takes place. Therefore, it is essential to have a good screenplay to keep the story as intriguing as possible. The screenplay is solid and there are genuine moments when the mysterious stalker is very creepy and scary. Due to the nature of the film’s themes, there is a lot of slang and computer terms that seasoned users of said social networking tools will appreciate and understand. If you are not very wise to how these programs work it may be hard to keep up with the story.

The actors weren’t the best but the film did work. It would seem that their jarring and annoying demeanor added to the theme of the piece however.

Overall, ‘Unfriended’ is an interesting film. I thought it was a very clever statement on modern life. There were moments that were genuinely scary and creepy but like most modern horror films it relied too much on jump scares. It conjured up good memories of ‘The Blair Witch Project’ in how it tried to be as realistic as possible whilst also addressing dark themes of today’s culture.

Actually pretty alright, maybe the format has been utilised better elsewhere, but you still have to admire _Unfriended’s_ dedication, especially for all the way back in 2014. That dedication does have some drawbacks though, the devotion to the realism unfortunately also means realistically low quality webcam video & audio, as well as the realistic wait times I’ve using a computer. It felt like for **so** much of _Unfriended_ I was just sitting there waiting for a page come up, or a file to download, or a response on an IM, and yes of course any computer user will absolutely have to wait for these things, but it’s not what you go to the movies to see.

Online, your memories live forever… but so do your mistakes.

A group of online chat room friends find themselves terrorised by someone or something using the account of their dead friend.

For someone like me who is way out of the age sphere for such things like the social media world featured here, Unfriended is a fascinating and unnerving experience. When your on line experiences are simply message boards and discussion forums etc, where twitter, skype, facebook and their like are alien to them, then one can only praise when an innovative and fresh idea is brought to the horror realm of film making. And lets face it, horror always needs new splinters to off set the ream of numerical sequels and remakes from hell.

Unfriended is not scary on conventional terms, where it’s not about to jolt you out of your seat or have you hiding behind the sofa. It is, however, scary how technology has advanced, how the millions of world wide web users so willingly commit to baring their innermost to all and sundry. Then there’s the dark half, those who use the platforms for venal and nefarious means, bringing very real terrors into our world.

I can’t personally vouch for how genuine the tech aspects are in this film, but Unfriended definitely taps into a frightening realm, and that is to be applauded. Oh I will not be watching it again, I mean what would be the point? But I’m glad I did take the plunge, and simultaneously I’m glad I’m one of those who is happy just texting and using email… 7.5/10

I am absolutely head over heels in love with writer-director Miranda July‘s “Kajillionaire,” a quirky, tender film that explores the longing for human connection wrapped up in a story about a family of down-on-their-luck con artists. The project has July’s signature style all over, and it’s one of the very best works of her career.

Theresa (Debra Winger) and Robert (Richard Jenkins) are life-long grifters. They’ve trained their only daughter, Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood), well. The trio are well-versed in every scam, swindle, and opportunity for thievery, from lifting mail from adjacent post office boxes to demanding a reward for finding “lost” jewelry. While on a mission to defraud a travel insurance company, they meet kind stranger Melanie (Gina Rodriguez), who is intrigued by the family. Melanie casually mentions that she has a crackerjack idea to trick her elderly customers into gifting her valuable antiques, which she can subsequently sell for cash. Desperate for rent money, the family invites Melanie to join them on their next heist, which turns Old Dolio’s world upside down.

The story is original, touching, very funny, and it goes places you won’t expect. Wood is fantastic as Old Dolio, a stoic, lonely, and strange young woman who is obsessed with the fact that she was never held as a baby. She longs to be shown affection, and it’s a heartbreaking character that Wood wholly embodies. All of the performances are fantastic, but she stands out.

The dry, wry humor is an acquired taste, but if you appreciate July’s previous work, you’ll likely love this. There are moments of greatness (including a beautiful scene about loneliness that takes place in a dying man’s apartment), and heavy themes about learning to love yourself and the joys of friendship and salvation are laid out in non-conventionally delicate but effective ways. I adored every single moment of this film.

The story turns from a generic tale of grifters into a lively portrait of self discovery, and it’s beautiful when Old Dolio begins to experience a true connection with Melanie as they devise a plan to free her from a life of petty crime.

“Kajillionaire” is uplifting and charming, and has a lot of original, insightful things to say about the world we all live in.

This is the first movie I watch from Miranda July. She’s been delivering films well-received by critics, but audiences seem to be pretty divisive about her storytelling methodology. Not that many people watch her movies, which doesn’t quite allow me to draw a conclusion about what the general public thinks about her, but there’s a clear tendency for overall positive feedback when a lot of people put their eyes on one of her pieces instead of just a couple of hundreds. Therefore, I was really intrigued by Kajillionaire’s synopsis, and the cast is interesting, to say the least. So, does Miranda conquers one more fan, or am I too stubborn to convince?

Her unconventional filmmaking style definitely captures my attention, but it’s her incredibly subtle character development that ultimately wins me over. Evan Rachel Wood’s Old Dolio doesn’t know how to live or what life truly is. She doesn’t understand or feels fundamental human interactions due to the loveless parenting that accompanied her throughout her entire life. She only knows how to steal, cheat, and live a life outside of the law. She believes life is meaningless and that a massive earthquake will change everything. So, Old Dolio is an easy character to root for and to connect with when things don’t work out as she expects. It’s impossible not to feel sorry for her. I constantly felt sad and even uncomfortable when she was emotionally suffering.

Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld, Frozen II) offers a unique interpretation of someone with this kind of personality, even changing her voice tone, delivering a notably layered performance. Evan and Gina Rodriguez (Melanie) share impeccable chemistry, a vital component in the main plot. Their characters create such an emotional bond that any sane and educated viewer will understand where their relationship is driving towards. This friendship is treated in such a respectful and realistic manner from Miranda July that I felt extremely pleased by everything surrounding it. It’s undoubtedly the primary source of entertainment.

However, it’s Gina Rodriguez (Annihilation, Scoob!) who genuinely elevates the whole story. Honestly, in my opinion, it’s her career-best performance. With tiny, little facial expressions, she’s able to clearly transmit to the viewer everything Melanie is feeling. She’s introduced at the right time, just when the film needs a push. Richard Jenkins and Debra Winger are also outstanding, especially the former who gives his character a few unexpected, emotionally powerful moments. Both parents are as cold and rigorous as they could be, teaching her daughter how to survive without any affection instead of how to live and be filled with love.

Miranda July writes a compelling narrative, packed with dramatic sequences, but also with quite a bit of humor. She employs a somewhat slow pacing, which doesn’t always work in favor of the movie. In fact, if it wasn’t for Gina and Evan’s incredibly captivating interactions, Kajillionaire would suffer much more from the family’s scamming business, something that quickly loses my enthusiasm. Sebastian Winterø’s cinematography is driven by the characters, lingering on their reactions longer than usual, letting the emotions sink in, and allowing the viewer to connect with the characters. This is impeccable work, aided by seamless editing (Jennifer Vecchiarello).

Technically, it’s a pretty well-produced film, but I do have an issue with the score by Emile Mosseri. I really enjoy most of the themes, but occasionally the volume is so loud that I had trouble listening to what the characters were saying. Since I had the option of going back a few seconds, I could hear some scenes again, so it didn’t exactly hurt my viewing. However, it’s still a technical issue that made me stop the movie, something I absolutely dislike, and I don’t know how much it could have impacted me had I watched this film at a theater.

In the end, Kajillionaire convinces me well enough to add Miranda July to my list of “directors to follow closely”. Boasting a character-driven narrative and a unique filmmaking style, Evan Rachel Wood and Gina Rodriguez share impressive chemistry, elevating their characters’ relationship, which is definitely the most captivating arc of the whole movie. Both Melanie and Old Dolio go through an extremely detailed yet visually subtle character development, which compelled me to root for their success in life. Gina steals the show with a career-best performance, but Evan’s bizarre display is also remarkable, as well as Richard Jenkins and Debra Winger’s excellent portrayals of the parents. Technically, Sebastian Winterø’s camera work and Jennifer Vecchiarello’s editing work perfectly together, but Emile Mosseri’s beautiful score is occasionally dialed up to a volume that hurts some dialogues. The slow pacing employed doesn’t quite work all the time, and the family’s swindling business quickly loses interest besides defying logic a couple of times. Overall, I recommend it to everyone, so give it a watch if you can!

There are few movies quite like Miranda July’s _Kajillionaire_. What begins as a movie about grifters and scam artists turns into one of the most achingly honest portrayals of loneliness ever made. Led by Evan Rachel Wood’s transformative performance of Old Dolio, _Kajillionaire_’s focus is on the scamming Dyne family. Parents Robert (Richard Jenkins) and Theresa (Debra Winger) have raised Old Dolio in a life of petty theft. They even named their daughter Old Dolio in an attempt to get money from a homeless man named Old Dolio, who won the lottery. Their get-rich-quick lifestyle meant more to them than providing a loving and thoughtful name for their child. For some reason, they thought the homeless person would leave any money that was left when he died to his namesake. Old Dolio’s life has been filled with lying, stealing, and scamming since the day she was born.

Remember the Panama Papers? Those leaked documents that detailed how various people and companies created off-shore shell companies in order to avoid paying billions if not trillions in taxes around the world? No?

I’m not surprised. It was a huge story that seemed to become a flash in the pan and many people forgot about it after the coverage dried up because, very likely, the corporations that run the news media tried to bury it. But these folks didn’t forget.

The film’s title refers to the whole operation as generally being a money laundering scheme. Featuring an ensemble cast of Hollywood who’s who as well as who’s that, this Steven Soderbergh film invariably draws comparisons to Adam McKay’s “The Big Short,” both in subject matter and style. The narrators, played by Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas, frequently address the camera directly. Usually, this has the effect of making the audience feel like they’re in on the scheme, but it’s not as effective as when it was used in, say, “House of Cards.” Why? I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it likely has to do with the complexity of the scheme. Their characters are more than just narrators, but are actual players in the overall story, lawyers who created the paperwork and did the legwork to get these schemes off the ground. As such, they actually try to explain it, both simplified and with a certain complexity that leaves one a little unsure of the truth. Maybe that was the idea, but from a storytelling perspective, it didn’t quite work.

And effect is part of the problem with this film. Aside from being done as a comedy for what is in fact a very serious subject (the reporter who exposed this story was later killed by a car bomb), this film doesn’t feel very effective in conveying outrage. In fact, it feels less like outrage and more like being impotently miffed. The film doesn’t feel like it conveys the gravity of the situation. Which is very disappointing given the talent involved and the chance to really bring this subject back into the public eye. While I have to give the filmmakers credit with trying to make the complex money laundering scheme in the Panama Papers digestible to a general audience and keeping this visible, ultimately it feels like it’s too little too late.
I didn’t enjoy this at all, yet I still weirdly reflect on it to be better than it had any right to be.

That’s thanks to the cast of ‘The Laundromat’. Meryl Streep (Ellen), Gary Oldman (Mossack) and Antonio Banderas (Fonseca) are the main reasons I’m not rating this lower. They stop it becoming an annoying watch. You also have Jeffrey Wright, David Schwimmer and Nonso Anozie involved too – as well as even Sharon Stone and James Cromwell.

I just didn’t like the way they chose to portray everything, I appreciate what they went for but it simply didn’t work for me. It’s definitely one of those things, though, that will depend on the viewer – I’m sure many will find it good.

The comedy is extremely lacking, in accordance to my tastes anyway. Also, even though I praised Oldman and Banderas themselves, I found their characters particularly irritating – same goes with the ending.

Feels like it merits an inferior score and yet… A charitable 5*.
